Plot Holes

I've run into a bit of a problem. I originally intended my main character to kidnap a princess. But as I started writing, it morphed into my main character trying to kill a cult leader instead. Both of these scenarios have plot holes. Kidnapping the princess I am more prepared to deal with, but it's a little cliche. (Okay, maybe a lot cliche.) Killing the cult leader has a lot more plot holes, but it's different and more exciting (at least the way I've written the two scenarios).

I need your help. Would you rather read about a princess being kidnapped for political reasons?
Or would you rather read about an attempted assassination on a cult leader?

(Note: No matter which scenario takes place, these two things happen: The princess turns out to be a murderous wench and the villain. The cult leader turns out to be an ally.)

Please vote in the comments. Thanks for your help!

  1. Oh, man! I was all ready to vote for option number one until I found out the princess turns into the bad guy. That's tough! I think the second has more wow factor but you should write what your heart is telling you to write. Or remember the scenario in case you can use it for another story.

  2. I agree with Cindy. I at first thought kidnapping would be nice, but then when you said that the princess is the villain, I changed my mind. -The second one sounds a little more interesting.
Both would be great, though. :)

  3. Who says you have to choose? Are they both in the same novel?

Write on one, just for kicks, and see if you can tie it in to the other. Write them both as seperate novel (or short story) ideas, and see where they take you.

Personally, I'd rather read about killing a cult leader. A public service IMO. And the princess thing - so overdone, even if she does turn out to be the villian.

  4. Hmm, cult leader sounds more interesting, but you need to write what you think works best for the story.

  5. Thanks Cindy. lol. I know...it is hard. But also exciting. It's these kinds of dilemmas I never mind very much.

Hi Gracia! Good to have you weigh in on this. You're my target audience! :D

Donna, yup, they're both in the same novel. I thought about doing both....hmmmmm.........maybe if I really need to up my word count at the end of NaNoWriMo. :) Just a note though, he never actually succeeds in killing the cult leader. Guess I should've mentioned that. Though perhaps in the end, he will. idk.

Hi Roni! Good to know. And good advice, too. I often find myself leaning towards a plot line I like and then find out it doesn't serve the story well at all.

I think at this point I'm leaning towards the princess kidnapping AND an attempted assassination on the cult leader. lol. NaNoWriMo does strange things to my novels. But it's all good. :D
