Fireworks! Explosions! Tomatos!

Today I am like a firework: pretty, pretty hot, and exploding because I can't contain my joyfulness at this wonderful day God has made.

Still working on that continuum of different kinds of metaphors. It's like pulling teeth to find time to work on it and I'm no dentist. But I'll figure it out.

MDA:

Compare an emotion with an element of nature, or vice versa. Classic metaphor formula.

Example:
Her cold pride needed some room to thaw out. It was like a tomato: best ripened in the dark.

Or

The waterfall angrily swept over the cliff.

Question on that last one: Do you consider it to be a metaphor or merely a description? Feel free to vote in the comments!

  1. I think the waterfall sentence is an anthropomorphicism, instead of a metaphor. Does that make sense?

  2. It could also be considered a personification. I looked them both up (anthropomorphism and personification) and I can't really tell the difference. They both relate to ascribing human or personal attributes to inanimate objects.

On a different (but related) note, I was wondering if the EMT was using artistic license (or some other type) to lump similes in with metaphors. Because if you aren't using a license, the Emergency Simile Technician might get upset.

  3. You are correct. The line between some of these things gets quite fuzzy.
I can't say I'm an expert at the terms...I'm just here in case of emergencies. Feel free to correct me if I accidentally use the word Metaphor when I should have said Simile.
Still working on a chart that illustrates the differences between all of these things.
Right now I'm of the opinion that they overlap greatly and only vary by shades of usage and slight differences in meaning.

And yay for comments! Thanks guys!
